Be part of something big. And make a change.
Critter Cubed is a game based on six animals living together in harmony. We wanted to create a game for a phone app, so we had the idea of producing a puzzle game on a rubiks cube. The player would have to change the faces of the cubes to different environments that the creature in the middle is happy with. The object of the game is to find the right combination, where all the animals are content. However, the player has a limited time to find the combination before the creatures become extinct. Please feel free to visit this site and test out our game. http://globalgamejam.org/2011/critter3    Ayu is the beautiful queen of Cube, who has ruled over the other Critters for many years. She is loved by all the other Critters… well almost.  Since his appearance on Cube, Zunga has refused to do anything Queen Ayu has asked of him, but she has been patient and kind with him, as she is with all the Critters. All the description were created by Cody Kicklighter.
My final year in college, I felt that I had to change the look of my portfolio to be more refined. So I redesigned my logo from an eagle to a whale shark. Whale sharks are the largest fish in our planet, they grow up to sixty feet and their diet consists of plankton and small fish. People who have see them underwater, say its an experience that is unreal. Ever since I was little I was obsessed with the whale sharks, so felt it was only natural that a gentle giant can represent me. Once I created the logo, I did this drawing in Photoshop to be part of my business card. I tried to convey through the drawing I can concept creatures, weapons, characters and environments. When it was completed, I truly felt satisfied that the drawing presented who I am.
When our group started brainstorming on how Cycle Slash would look, we really wanted a Tron world with an influence of Gothic architecture. It after three months we started seeing the concept was getting too close to the Tron world. It was then I took the polar opposite of Tron and made a world of poverty, where there is only room to expand upwards.
Critter cubed was a project that was created within 48 hours on a weekend. It was for an event called Global Game Jam. It was a group of six people, three artists and three programers. I was given the position of lead concept artist and so I created all the monsters for the game. Months later I found the monster designs a little too mature and so I redesigned them to make them child friendly. This bunny was one of the first in the new batch of monsters I created. Kabuki is known as the “popular girl” on Cube, and everyone wants to be her friend. She spends all her time with her best friend Culi, making him brush her fur or telling him to find carrot cubes for her to eat. Queen Ayu has told her that she needs to think of others more, but she doesn’t seem to have listened. These descriptions were produced by one of our group members, Cody Kicklighter.
I was listening to the song Sirens of the Sea by OceanLad and I figured I should make a concept of sirens. I did not want to create a generic siren however something grotesque and human like with parts of marine animals. So I started using the gray maker technique to create these concepts. I started using jellyfish, manta rays, angler fish and eels as inspiration. I figured a siren might have the beautiful voice above the surface, though a hideous appearance below.
This is the Wind God from the world of Tao which I have posted before. I thought of the idea when listening to the song Ave Maria by Paul Schwartz in the album Aria 2. In the world of Tao, there are five elements, wind, water, fire, earth, and metal. Each element has been dormant in their temples. As a player in this video game idea, the player has to release the gods of each element. When I was creating the element deity of wind I thought of birds and clouds. So I got inspired by the snowy owl and the white egret, which are birds of white. My first design for the character was lucky enough the final one. I tried pushing the concept into different directions, though the others could not compete. If you listen to the song I was inspired by, you could really imagine this graceful bird flying through jagged mountain tops almost like if it was swimming through air.
